Rezum therapy for enlarged prostate, a system manufactured by Boston Scientific, is a method in which steam energy is used to cut (or remove) a specific part of the prostate that is enlarged and causing BPH-related symptoms.

How is it done?

Resum therapy is administered using a handpiece and a radio frequency generator. The procedure may be performed in an operating room or procedure room under general or local anesthesia (usually a urethral lignocaine gel) with sedation in selected cases. Each steam injection takes nine seconds to deliver and is systematically placed in the prostatic transition zone, with the number of injections corresponding to the overall volume and endoscopic appearance of the prostate.

The larger and more occluded the prostate, the more injections must be given to the patient to ensure an effective procedure.
